Historical Editorial Review
World Light is a long novel, originally published in four books that are compiled into this paperback version, that tells the story of a poet, Olafur, in early 20th century Iceland. At first, the protagonist's pitifulness can feel excessive, but as the story expands, the reader is introduced to a wide range of village characters that provide further depth to the narrative. Along the way, the book thoughtfully describes and parodies the exploitation of the capitalists and corrupted government socialists. While not a happy book, it feels very real and moves the reader with its portrayal of Olafur's life and his relationships. The Prose is excellent, making it a worthwhile read for those who are into serious literature. However, it may be challenging for those looking for a happy resolution, and those who do not possess the kind of visionary senses required to appreciate it may find it challenging.
