Wagner: Tristan und Isolde[2 DVD]

The customer review for the Tristan Und Isolde DVD production criticized the staging and portrayal of characters, mentioning that it subverts the intentions of Wagner. The reviewer felt that the characters were portrayed in a tasteless and vulgar manner, contradicting their noble and honorable nature as described in the libretto. Specific criticisms included Tristan and Isolde being depicted as low, common, and coarse, Mark being portrayed as a sneering gangster instead of a man of noble blood, and the setting of Act II being transformed into a prison-like environment rather than a pleasant garden. The review highlighted that these deviations from the original intentions of the opera compromised the credibility and emotional impact of the story. In summary, the reviewer believed that this production of Tristan Und Isolde failed to capture the essence of the characters and the medieval world of honor and dignity that they inhabit, resulting in a distorted and unconvincing portrayal of the tragic love story. **
