One user was able to pinpoint the rough depth of a located pipe by counting foot stomps, but this method is not very precise. The device works well for locating all types of drainage pipes, including hard plastic, corrugated and those made of steel and concrete. The Magnetomatic can detect copper and 1/2" cast iron water pipes buried more than 12 inches, but it is not always effective when gas lines are under a pavement.
