The book tells the story of a young African American man, Steve Harmon, who is on trial for allegedly participating in a robbery that led to a murder. The narrative not only delves into the complexities of Steve's character and his struggle to be seen as a 'monster' in his community and by the court, but also raises important questions about morality, race, and societal perceptions. These themes resonate with readers who are interested in the intersection of personal identity and systemic injustice.

Who are the main characters in 'Monster'?

The primary character in 'Monster' is Steve Harmon, a 16-year-old aspiring filmmaker who is facing trial for his alleged involvement in a crime. Other notable characters include his mother, who is supportive yet distressed by the situation, and his defense attorney, Kathy O’Brien, who fights for Steve’s innocence. Each character contributes to the narrative by showcasing different perspectives on the justice system and its impact on individuals, particularly young people of color. Readers often connect with these characters on a personal level, making the story more impactful.

What is the narrative style of 'Monster'?

'Monster' is written in a unique screenplay format, allowing readers to see Steve's thoughts and feelings while also witnessing the interactions in the courtroom. This innovative approach not only engages readers but also emphasizes the performative aspects of identity, as Steve grapples with how he is perceived by others versus who he really is. This narrative structure helps to capture the tension of the trial and the emotional turmoil of the protagonist, making it an impactful read for those interested in modern storytelling techniques.

Prejudice & Racism Editorial Review

The Monster by Walter Dean Myers is a good book for school reading assignments that can relate to teenagers today, although it does include occasional red flags. The story itself is not challenging or relatable. The book arrived quickly and in good condition. While the book is engaging and well-written, some customers have experienced issues with printing quality, such as missing the entire ending and repeated pages. One negative review claims the book is pure racial stereotyping and should not be required reading, while another gives it high praise, recommending it to anyone with teenage sons, especially if melanated. Overall, the book is a great read for those who enjoy young adult fiction and is worth Considering for school assignments.
