Format: DVD Mystery & Thrillers Editorial Review
"Calvary" is a powerful and thought-provoking film set in a small rural village in Ireland, following the life of a "good priest" played superbly by Brendan Gleeson. The movie takes place in the aftermath of the worldwide scandal of Catholic priests sexually abusing children, although the priest in this story is not guilty of such crimes. However, he faces disrespect and scorn from some townspeople, especially one individual who holds contempt for Catholic priests. The film is Considered a black comedy and has its lighter moments. The acting performances from the entire cast are excellent, and the movie provides a deep exploration of the psychological trauma experienced by victims of clergy sexual abuse. The scenery in County Sligo, where the film is set, is beautifully captured, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal. However, some scenes in the movie are difficult to watch, and the overall tone of the film is downbeat. Despite this, "Calvary" is highly recommended for its stellar acting, thought-provoking themes, and authentic portrayal of a small Irish village. The movie deserves more viewers and is a worthwhile addition to any movie collection.
