Nightbeast

**** "Nightbeast" is a prime example of what can be described as a "good bad movie," and it has garnered a cult following among fans of low-budget science fiction and horror. Directed by Don Dohler, known for creating films that appeal to nerd culture rather than mainstream audiences, "Nightbeast" embraces its cheesy aesthetics with gusto. With a minuscule budget of $14,000, the film showcases a plot where an alien crash-lands in a rural town and wreaks havoc, leading to a comedic mishmash of wooden performances, absurd dialogue, and laughable special effects. Critics agree that the acting is subpar, but it fits the film's drive-in movie vibe. Highlights include a cop with an absurd perm and a "love scene" reminiscent of the film's quirky charm rather than any genuine intimacy. Viewers recommend watching "Nightbeast" in groups, as the experience is amplified by shared laughter—ideal for fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000-style commentary. The film's recent releases on DVD and Blu-ray have sparked discussions among enthusiasts, particularly regarding the aspect ratio. While the Vinegar Syndrome release offers a fully restored version intended by the director, Troma's version opts for a cropped widescreen format that has not pleased some purists. Nonetheless, the Troma release is praised for its decent extras, including commentaries and behind-the-scenes footage, although critiques remain about its audio quality. Overall, "Nightbeast" is characterized by genuine fun and nostalgia, perfect for anyone who appreciates schlock horror will enjoy its blend of humor and horror, making it a recurrent choice for late-night movie marathons. **
