- Der Kaiser ist tot - es lebe der Kaiser... Das Reich - Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt - ist gewaltig und scheint zu blühen. Doch der gewaltsame Tod des Herrschers bringt alles ins Wanken. Und die scheinbar klare Regelung über seine Nachfolge ist alles andere als genau das. Am Ende tritt ein uralter Passus in Kraft, wonach der Thronfolger in einem Turnier als stärkster und mutigster Kämpfer ermittelt werden muss. Ein perfider und heimtückischer Plan sorgt dafür, dass die Erde als Arena hierfür auserwählt wird. Als Celica, eine junge Scheme, erkennt, dass auch ihr Bruder Argoras in die Geschehnisse rund um das Turnier hineingezogen wird, schwört sie, ihm zur Seite zu stehen. Doch sehr schnell muss sie erkennen, dass dieses Versprechen weit mehr von ihr abverlangt, als sie sich je hätte träumen lassen und sie viel tiefer in das Spiel um Macht und Reichtum eindringt, als ihr lieb ist. Und das die bösen Mächte, die für den Tod des Kaisers verantwortlich sind, auch den Ausgang des Turniers beeinflussen wollen und vor weiteren Morden nicht zurückschrecken. Am Ende muss Celica eine Entscheidung treffen, die nicht nur ihr eigenes Leben grundlegend verändern wird. Doch alles wäre viel einfacher für sie, wenn da nicht auch noch dieser Mensch namens Nicolas wäre, für den sie viel mehr empfindet, als sie sich eingestehen will. Und niemand kann zu diesem Zeitpunkt auch nur erahnen, welche Rolle er noch spielen wird...
