American Civil War Editorial Review
**Editorial Review of Grant's Cavalryman (Stackpole Classics)** "Grant's Cavalryman" offers readers a robust exploration of General James Wilson, an influential figure in the American Civil War, famed for his tactical maneuvers and organizational brilliance. The author deftly balances Wilson’s strengths and flaws, presenting him not just as a heroic leader but also as a complex and at times controversial figure. While Wilson's ambitious nature often made him an outsider among his peers, his contributions to the Union war effort are undeniable. Readers are treated to insightful anecdotes that reveal Wilson’s relationships with prominent generals like Ulysses S. Grant and George Thomas, showcasing a dynamic that contributed significantly to the North's victory. Wilson's ability to confront challenges head-on, such as revitalizing the cavalry and improving the arms procurement process, underscores his nearness to essential war strategies. His daring leadership during critical confrontations, notably in battles against Nathan Bedford Forrest, further solidifies his place in military history. The book succeeds as a detailed examination, not only for casual readers but also for history buffs and cavalry enthusiasts. However, it offers more than just a catalog of battles and achievements; it's a study of character. Wilson’s personal journey, marked by successes and failures alike, raises compelling questions about how personality traits can impact a military career. While some readers might find his brashness off-putting, others will appreciate the determination and courage that defined his service. In summary, "Grant's Cavalryman" is both an engaging read and an educational resource, capturing the intricacies of Wilson’s character and reflecting on broader themes within the Civil War. **
