Le roman Le roman raconte l'histoire de Jean Valjean, condamné au bagne pour avoir volé un pain et traqué sans relâche par l'inspecteur Javert ; mais aussi celle de Cosette, maltraitée par les Thénardier, puis adoptée par Jean Valjean, ou de Gavroche, devenu l'archétype du gamin de Paris. Une grande fresque historique et sociale, dans laquelle Hugo dénonce la misère et prend parti pour les déshérités. (lettre de Victor Hugo à Alphonse de Lamartine, le 24 juin 1862) L'auteurMonstre sacré de la littérature française, Victor Hugo s'est aussi illustré par son engagement politique. Dans son Discours sur la misère, en 1849, il appelle l'Assemblée législative à voter des lois contre la pauvreté et la misère sociale. Sa participation à la résistance face au coup d'Etat de Napoléon III en 1851 lui vaut plusieurs années d'exil, à Guernesey, et c'est là qu'il écrit Les Misérables. Ses funérailles en 1885 sont nationales : il est conduit au Panthéon, suivi par un cortège de 2 millions de personnes.
