Good Wives, published in 1869, focuses mainly on sisters forming new relationships and leaving the family home. As the four siblings grow up and find their place in the world, things begin to change for the March family. While Meg wants to build a good home for herself and John, Jo desires to write and travel; Amy hopes to improve her art and make a fortune; Beth wants to feel like the good old days again. Meanwhile, Laurie goes to university as Jo wants and tries to get her life in order. The novel is both a continuation of the story that began in Little Women and a summary of Alcott's attitude towards the idea of marriage. Although he depicts young women with virtues such as patience, love and compassion, it can be said that he struggled with traditional marriage norms at the time, and in the case of Jo, he destroys the reader's romantic ideals.
