- Farsça da pend kelimesi vaaz, öğüt, nasihat demektir.Pandname, insanlara öğüt ve nasihat veren, din, tasavvuf ve ahlâk konularını hem manzum, hem de mensur yani düzyazı ve şiir şeklinde işlemiştir. Farsçadan gelen bu isim pend ve name isimlerinin birleşmesi ile oluşmuştur.Pendnâme’yi ilk olarak XVI. yüzyıl şairlerinden Sabâyî Türkçe’ye tercüme etmiştir. Sonraki yüzyıllarda da tercüme edilmeye devam edilen esere birçok yazar tarafından manzum ve mensur şerhler yazılmıştır.Fars edebiyatında nasihatnâme / pendnâme yazma geleneği çok eskilere dayanmaktadır. Pendnâmelerin Sasaniler döneminden itibaren yazıldığı bilinmektedir.
