- Rene Descartes (1596-1650): Fransız matematikçi, bilim adamı ve filozof. Skolastik Aristotelesçiliği ilk terk edenlerdendir. Zihin-beden probleminin ilk modern versiyonunu formüle edip gözlem ve deneyi temel alan yeni bir bilimin gelişimine önayak olduğu için modern felsefenin babası olarak anılır. İlk kez 1637'de yazarının adı yer almaksızın yayımlanan Yöntem Üzerine Konuşma, Descartes'ın geçmişinin muhasebesini yaptığı bir otobiyografi ve evrensel bilim projesinin girişini oluşturan bir felsefe ve bilim eseridir.
