- Le 16 octobre 1992, on célèbre les 30 ans de carrière de Bob Dylan au Madison Square Garden de New York. Une trentaine d'invités reprennent ses chansons. Vers la fin du concert, se côtoient pour la première fois sur la même scène George Harrison, Roger McGuinn, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty et Neil Young. Au milieu d'eux, Bob Dylan himself, pas au mieux de sa forme. Mais sans lui, sans sa présence, aucun de ses prestigieux collègues n'interpréterait avec la même intensité ce My Back Pages choisi pour l'occasion, chacun son couplet d'une chanson plus connue par les Byrds que dans sa version d'origine. Et pourtant : à l'été 1964, un Dylan de 23 ans, jusque-là prince du protest song, y traduisait son désarroi. Il aspirait à mettre en musique son monde intérieur, non plus les plaies de la société. Première mutation d'une longue série à venir, qui ferait de ce chanteur-auteur à part la figure la plus influente du rock & folk américain et au-delà. En s'arrêtant sur chacun de ses disciples, en remontant aux sources de cette chanson singulière devenue hymne commun, ce livre offre une perspective nouvelle sur un artiste qui a suscité déjà tant de littérature.
